In his address, then-Minister Gan Kim Yong commended Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan for its dedication to preserving and promoting Teochew culture. While acknowledging the importance of economic development, he emphasised that culture reflects the values and character of a nation, its people and its individuals. Cultural literacy, unity and mutual support are equally vital. A shared cultural identity, he noted, enables people to stand united in times of adversity with the spirit of “KaKi Nang” (“our own people”), working together to overcome challenges. He added that cultural and educational activities play an important role in preserving traditions and promoting positive values, and therefore deserve continued support. He also encouraged local community organisations to broaden their outreach beyond their own communities and contribute to the well-being of the nation as a whole.

On the morning of 15 December, then-Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean visited the festival. He watched the spectacular martial opera Dang Ma performed by the Xiaomeihua Art Troupe and presented commemorative Gold Teochew Opera Cards, crafted in pure gold, to the festival’s principal sponsors. He remarked that the festival was highly educational, particularly for its outstanding presentation of Teochew cultural heritage. Learning that many young people had actively participated in organising the festival, he expressed his delight and hoped that their involvement would inspire a deeper appreciation of the history and cultural heritage of Singapore’s Teochew community.

Mr Ong Ye Kung, then-Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) and Second Minister for Defence, also visited the festival. Upon seeing a stall selling traditional peanut candy crepes (tong cong bing), he fondly recalled childhood memories of accompanying his grandmother to his grandfather’s optical shop, where a nearby stall sold the same delicacy. He shared, “We should all have some understanding of our ancestors’ history. Singapore’s identity and culture have developed from these roots. It is not that we came to a new place and created an entirely new culture. Rather, we have gradually woven together the cultures of our forefathers into the vibrant, diverse and kaleidoscopic Singapore culture we know today.”

As part of Teochew Festival 2016, nearly 10% of the exhibition space (over 4,000 square feet) was dedicated to the Qiaopi Heritage Gallery, extending the theme of “The History of Teochews’ Overseas Migration” presented at the inaugural festival in 2014. Qiaopi refers to letters and remittances sent home by Chinese emigrants working abroad. Once an essential part of the daily lives of overseas Chinese, these letters embody profound cultural significance and bear witness to the perseverance, resilience and sacrifices of earlier generations who ventured overseas in search of a better future. The gallery comprised six thematic sections.

  • The first and second sections introduced the historical background of early overseas migration and displayed 300 “Coolie Dollars” (Zhuzai Qian). These clay tokens, privately issued by coolie depots, were used to control the financial freedom of Chinese labourers who had migrated to Southeast Asia under harsh conditions.
  • The third section explored the history, cultural significance and social value of Qiaopi, featuring a collection of rare historical correspondence. Among the exhibits were 50 original Qiaopi letters on loan from the Chaoshan History and Culture Research Centre of Shantou, alongside selected highlights from 150 Qiaopi letters collected locally by Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan.

  • The fourth section introduced the “Shuike”—the earliest couriers responsible for delivering Qiaopi—as well as the remittance agencies and private postal businesses established and operated by Singapore’s Teochew community, explaining their history and mode of operation.

  • The fifth section highlighted prominent Teochew entrepreneurs in the remittance business, including Ng Sian Chew of Thye Siong, Lee Wee Nam of Seng Hwee Kee, and Ng Khim Seng of You Xin Zhuang. Many of these successful businessmen also served as leaders of Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan.

  • The sixth section focused on the history, development and contributions of Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan.
