Teochew Festival 2014
The 2014 Singapore Teochew Festival was held at Ngee Ann City on Orchard Road
In 2014, Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan organised the 8th International Teochew Youth Convention and, concurrently, hosted the 12-day Singapore Teochew Festival, a cultural celebration held at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza between September and October. The festival attracted more than 100,000 visitors, becoming one of Singapore’s major cultural events. Spanning over 30,000 square metres, the festival featured over 20 exhibitors and participating organisations, showcasing the rich Teochew cultural heritage of the Chaoshan region, contemporary arts and crafts, captivating cultural performances, and an extensive array of authentic Teochew cuisine. The event drew Teochews from Singapore, the wider Chinese community, members of other ethnic communities, as well as international tourists, making it a major cultural celebration in Singapore.

The Teochew festival welcomed nearly 10,000 visitors each day, attracting people of all ages and backgrounds. Among them were elderly Teochews longing for the familiar sights and flavours of their hometown, young children discovering their cultural roots, and members of the post-80s and post-90s generations who had often heard stories of their ancestral homeland from their grandparents but had never had the opportunity to visit. There were also middle-aged visitors who came in search of their roots, bearing the mission of preserving their heritage. For Teochews living far from home, the festival rekindled familiar flavours and memories of their homeland. For elderly members of the community, it evoked treasured recollections of the past. At the same time, it introduced non-Teochew Singaporeans and visitors of other ethnic backgrounds to the distinctive regional culture of China—the rich and enduring culture of Chaoshan.

Teochew Festival
The Singapore Teochew Festival was made possible through the collective efforts of the Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan and Teochew communities from Singapore and around the world, who worked hand in hand, contributing their talents and efforts, to ensure the success of the event. Drawing inspiration from the rich heritage of Chaoshan culture, they generously shared its traditions with a global audience. Even after the festival concluded, the excitement surrounding Teochew culture continued to resonate among the public. The promotional theme song, “Teochew Nang, KaKi Nang, Hey Yo Hey Yo!” (“Teochew People, Our Own People”), became a familiar and memorable part of the celebration.
The festival’s logo was inspired by the traditional Teochew delicacy png kueh (steamed glutinous rice cake). Eight interconnected png kueh symbolised harmony and reunion while also representing the eight historic Teochew counties—Chao’an, Chenghai, Chaoyang, Jieyang, Raoping, Puning, Huilai, and Nan’ao. This humble delicacy embodied the Board’s spirit of unity and the collective commitment to advancing the Huay Kuan’s mission. It also expressed the heartfelt hope that Teochews everywhere would always remember their roots, remain grateful, and cherish the enduring bond of being “our own people.”

The Singapore Teochew Festival promotional video, “Teochew Nang, KaKi Nang, Hey Yo Hey Yo!” (“Teochew People, Our Own People”), was creatively conceived by Singaporean advertising professional Lim Siew Fun. Combining the melody of the internationally well-known song Jambalaya with the familiar Teochew expression “Teochew Nang, KaKi Nang”, the campaign featured four distinct versions: a children’s rendition, a male vocal version, an instrumental version, and a female vocal version. Each rendition retained a warm and approachable style while preserving the distinctive charm of Teochew tradition. As a cultural medium, the Teochew dialect has preserved and passed down the traditions of the Chaoshan region for centuries, embodying the unique heritage and identity of the Teochew people.
The promotional campaign comprised 12 different video versions, each thoughtfully produced by Lim Siew Fun.
At the heart of traditional Eastern values are loyalty, filial piety, benevolence, and righteousness. These virtues are deeply embedded in Teochew culture and have been passed down through generations. Respect for family relationships, strong kinship ties, solidarity, perseverance, mutual support, diligence, simplicity, an enterprising spirit, compassion towards others, and the courage to embrace challenges are among the defining characteristics of the Teochew spirit. Among the highlights of the Teochew Festival was a meticulously crafted gold edition of the Standards for Being a Good Student and Child (Di Zi Gui). Made entirely of pure gold, each page was engraved with timeless teachings, while the traditional thread-bound format reflected the elegance and refinement of Chinese cultural heritage. This valuable collector’s item was exhibited and offered for sale during the festival.
