On 30 September 2017, as part of its 88th Anniversary celebrations, Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan, Singapore, organized the world’s first Miss Teochew Beauty Pageant to engage more young people in clan association activities and promote the innovative transmission of Teochew culture. Singapore’s Minister for Finance, Mr Heng Swee Keat, graced the anniversary dinner as the Guest of Honour. From 40 applicants, 19 finalists aged 21 to 34 were selected to compete, showcasing the charm and confidence of modern Teochew women.

The competition comprised two rounds. In the first round, contestants appeared in sportswear and introduced themselves in Teochew. In the second round, they wore elegant cheongsams and answered questions related to the association and Teochew culture in Mandarin or English. Contestants also presented diverse talents, including singing, dancing, guzheng performance, calligraphy, and stand-up comedy, demonstrating both grace and versatility.

The judging panel evaluated contestants based on overall appearance and poise, character and attitude, speech and presentation skills, as well as confidence and stage presence. Ultimately, Zeng Peining was crowned the winner of the inaugural Miss Teochew pageant. Chen Jinhui was awarded first runner-up, while Bao Chenwei received second runner-up. Chen Yujun won the title of Miss Photogenic, and Shen Tong was named Miss Friendship.

As the Huay Kuan’s first-ever beauty pageant and the world’s first pageant dedicated to celebrating Teochew women, the event aimed to encourage greater youth participation in the Huay Kuan, unite the younger generation, and preserve and promote the rich heritage of Teochew culture.
